Kenneth V. Honn, Ph.D.
Dr. Honn received his Ph.D. in 1977 from Wayne State University. He is a Distinguished Professor of Radiation Oncology and Pathology and Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Wayne State University. In addition, he is a member of the Karmanos Cancer Institute; a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Metropolitan Detroit. Dr. Honn has served on numerous Study Sections reviewing grants for the National Cancer Institute, served as a consultant to various pharmaceutical companies, serves on the editorial board of eleven cancer related scientific journals, and serves as editor-in-chief of Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, one of the leading cancer review journals in the world. Dr. Honn’s research interests are in the study of the role of eicosanoids (a generic term for lipid molecules with biological activities, such as prostaglandins) in tumor growth and the spread of cancer, i.e. metastasis. His work also includes the study of new blood vessel formation, i.e. angiogenesis, and the development of its inhibitors. He has been issued 13 U.S. patents for the development of new anticancer drugs and for their use in treating various types of cancer most notably prostate cancer. In that regard, Dr. Honn has served as head of the Prostate Cancer Program for the Karmanos Cancer Institute and has served as a member of the Michigan Department of Community Health Prostate Cancer Advisory Committee. He serves on the Board of The Fund for Cancer Research, a foundation that makes grants to cancer researchers in Michigan, and is the President of the Eicosanoid Research Foundation. Dr. Honn has published over 300 papers in the scientific literature dealing with his special interest in prostate cancer. His work is widely cited and he received a citation from the Wayne State University Board of Governors as the Most Cited Wayne State University faculty member. Over the course of his career, Dr. Honn has been awarded in excess of fifty grants from various foundations, pharmaceutical firms, and the National Institutes of Health. The total dollars awarded to Dr. Honn for his research thus far exceeds $22,000,000.
